Office 2024 vs. Microsoft 365 vs. Office 2021: Which One-Time Purchase or Subscription Fits

Office 2024 Professional Plus is a one-time purchase; Microsoft 365 is a subscription; Office 2021 is the previous generation, now close to the end of its support window. The short version: pick the first for a one-time cost and the current app set, the subscription if you want continuous updates and cloud storage across multiple devices, and neither if you're still deciding: the older generation isn't a good long-term choice once its support ends. Buy Office 2024 Professional Plus once you've confirmed which edition fits below, or see the Office 2024 Professional Plus product overview and pricing first.

Apps included in Office 2024, Microsoft 365, and Office 2021
Office 2024 Professional Plus includes Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word, with Skype for Business as an optional install. Microsoft Publisher is not included, and its retirement is scheduled for after October 2026. Teams is not preinstalled with any one-time purchase edition; it's a separate download either way.
The subscription includes the same core apps plus continuous access to new features as Microsoft ships them.
The previous generation, Office 2021, included Publisher (a difference from the current release) but used the same major version number scheme: both share version 16.0, so existing group policies and add-ins built for that generation or for Office 2019 remain compatible with what's sold here.
Pricing: Office 2024 vs. Microsoft 365 vs. Office 2021
As sold on this site, Office 2024 Professional Plus costs €16.85 as a single payment, delivered by email after checkout. Microsoft's own consumer editions of the 2024 generation are priced separately in US dollars on the Microsoft Store: Office Home 2024 at $149.99 and Office Home & Business 2024 at $249.99, figures for a different edition and currency, listed here only to show that Microsoft's direct consumer pricing and the volume-licensed edition sold here are not the same purchase. The subscription is billed monthly or annually instead of as a single payment, and its price is set by Microsoft's own plans, not by this site.
System requirements and activation across the three
Office 2024 Professional Plus needs Windows 11 or Windows 10 LTSC 2019/2021, plus Windows Server 2022/2025; a 1.1 GHz dual-core processor; 4 GB of RAM; 4 GB of free disk space; and a display resolution of at least 1280×768 (64-bit required for 4K and higher). It does not run on macOS: there is no Mac version of this particular edition, and Access isn't available on Mac OS in any edition. Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 support a comparable range of Windows versions for the same version of Office family. Microsoft 365, by contrast, is also available on macOS in addition to Windows. Activating any of these one-time purchase editions requires a Microsoft account and an internet connection; the subscription requires the same kind of account to manage itself.
Updates, storage, and support
With a one-time purchase (either generation), you receive security updates only, no new features after release, and no bundled cloud storage. The subscription keeps adding features continuously and includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage per user on Family, Premium, and Pro plans, with apps available across all of a subscriber's devices and up to five simultaneous sign-ins.
Support timelines matter for a one-time purchase, since there's no upgrade path built in. Office LTSC 2024 (the family Professional Plus belongs to) receives mainstream support until October 10, 2029. Office 2021 is close behind: the consumer edition goes out of support around October 14, 2026, and Office LTSC 2021 around October 13, 2026, both about two weeks from today. That gap is the main practical reason to compare the two generations now rather than after the older one stops receiving updates; being a subscription, Microsoft 365 doesn't have this kind of hard cutoff for the software itself, only for how long you keep paying.
Which edition fits: Office 2024, Office Home 2024, or Microsoft 365
If you mainly need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without an ongoing fee, Office 2024 Professional Plus or Office Home 2024 (the consumer edition) both fit that pattern; see how they differ in the full product overview. If you need Outlook and commercial-use rights bundled the same way, Office Home & Business 2024 is Microsoft's own answer, sold separately from this site. If cloud storage, continuous updates, and multi-device access matter more than a lower upfront cost, the subscription is the better fit, and this comparison should be read as informational rather than as a recommendation against it. Frequently asked questions about this comparison
Do I need a new Microsoft account to move from Office 2021 to Office 2024? No. The same account works for both generations; redeeming a new product key simply attaches the newer release to it. See our install and activation guide for the full steps.
Can I run any of these three on a Mac? Microsoft 365 runs on macOS. Office 2021 has a comparable Mac release in its own generation. Professional Plus, as sold here, does not: the closest volume-licensing equivalent is Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024, a different product, and Access isn't available on Mac OS in any edition. Full compatibility answers are in our FAQ.
